Did a lap of the pillar, a couple of yards radius of the cairn. No more sign of the bolt than johnlew's dig 3 years ago.

OS record this as a buried item, so previous loggers 'Possibly Missing' when none have dug for it is a little unfair - have changed the state back to 'Unknown'. From the given GRs for the Cairn and Bolt, it is off-set 0.97m E and 1.74m N from the cairn. At that point I concentrated my search, probing the ground and digging. Ultimately nothing found. But there is a problem in that the OS record the cairn as destroyed, so has the current cairn been built in exactly the same spot, and if it is, should the off-sets be taken from centre of the cairn or the N & E edges? To cap it all despite having a spade and prodder, I forgot to bring a measure - doh!

The bolt is described in the OS trig marks database as 'bolt in rock; mark buried' with the coordinates placing it about 2 metres from the original cairn. The database records both cairn and bolt as computed in 1955; i.e the bolt did not replace the cairn. No rock outcrops at the summit but using a long-bladed screwdriver as a probe, there seems to be a solid platform a few inches below the surface - maybe the foundations of the cairn. Trial digs with a trowel on the Addlebrough side found nothing but a spade would be needed to do a thorough search; perhaps a metal detector as well. So possibly 'possibly missing' - not really sure.

Noticed this had popped up recently in the lists so as I was doing Drumaldrace cairn it was a good chance to have a search for this bolt.Had a look all round the cairn and nearby. Also lifted stones from around base and from top of cairn but saw nothing however there was a lot of snow and ice about so recorded as possibly missing

Pennine Way from Hawes to Dodd, then returning over Drumaldrace. My non-digital photographs show the cairn being extant, but no sign of a bolt. Moderate views.

Out with DO, MT doing Walk 12.5 of John & Anne Nuttall's guide The Mountains of England and Wales Volume 2 - England. We came here after a rainy day up in Coniston - weather not much better dull, overcast and misty. Did both Drumaldrace and Dodd Fell Hill from Cam road . Didn't know about any other trig point types other than pillars back then so didn't look for the bolt
