Easily accessed over a gate on Shelfield lane with a short climb to the trig and Waltons Monument. Slight cracking in and around the flush bracket. Excellent panoramic views.

HISTORY: Pillar built in March 1949 costing £9.15s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD96/T41 in 1951. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in October 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from south. Parked on southeast side of Sheffield Lane opposite field boundary at SD894371. Direct route up to top. Grazing top with Walton's Monument. Pillar in fair condition. Spider fitted with plastic cap by JWR, 2/07/2000. Flush bracket faces southeast, ~145°. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Full 360° panoramic view.

Bagged this one after walking up from Colne railway station. Went onto bag the Trig on Extwistle Moor, and Boulsworth Hill before heading back to Colne. A tough but worth it hike. You can follow a detailed walk up and route of this walk by typing Fell Finder into Google!

An easy few-hundred yard walk up from one of two roads which meet near here, though I choose to pick a time when the field had just been manured. Trig shows some external cracks and the plug is a plastic one. Good views towards Pendle. Walton's monument, 27 feet tall, stands next to the Trig - said to have been built by the Rev. Rowe Walton of Marsden Hall in 1835. The monument also stands on what is thought to be the site of a great battle, the Battle of Brunanburgh, fought in AD 937.

Walton Spire was built in 1835 by the Rev Rowe Walton of Marsden Hall and is 27 feet high. Strong winds blew the monument down in January 1984 and it was rebuilt the following year. The base of the Spire is believed to be a monument re: The Battle of Brunanburgh. On a good day the views from up here are excellent. It was throwing down when I was here!

Great view across Nelson to Pendle Hill. Trig very cracked. The adjacent Walton's Monument is fascinating. Known locally as Walton Spire, it is thought to have been built in the Victorian times on the site (and subsequent burial ground) of an ancient battle, possibly the Battle of Brunanburgh in 937 AD. I don't know who Walton was, yet!
