Visited this very popular Peak District trig during a 13.8 mile walk from our holiday cottage in Hope. There were several people around, but not too bad really, as you can park close by for an easy short ascent to bag the trig. But better still make a full day walk along the length of the great ridge and into Castleton. There are many routes to choose that visit Mam Tor, and all of them are good.

This visit was part of a circular night walk with friends. Once on the top we were exposed to very strong winds making the conditions very challenging. The pillar is generally in good condition albeit the original centre is missing from the spider. Nothing much to see in the dark but I know from previous visits just how good the views are and the score I've given is partly based on that.

Fairly early when I arrived, so the carpark was largely empty, though by the time I was done, it was filling up. Steady climb to the pillar, but absolutely no views to be had - very foggy today. Only a small handful of folks - and sheep - at the summit, so had the pillar pretty much to myself. My first stone built pillar, missing its original centre cap, but in overall good condition. Nice to have ticked this one off the list. Just a shame about the weather. Pillar history: Built on the 1st of September 1947, at a cost of £17 1s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in November of 1970.

What a fantastic day! Peerless blue sky and not a breath of wind. Views from here were superlative - especially over Edale and Hopedale and the sun starting to go down over the Pennine ridge near 'The Cat and Fiddle'. Quite breathtaking. What a pity about the Castleton cement works! The National Trust have done a great job with the path to the summit and there is even a low mound of individual stone sets that the pillar stands on. It wasn't like this 20 years ago when I was last here! Anyway, the pillar is non-standard local stone with a plastic plug replacement. All hooks are damaged. All sight holes open. Almost all the white paint has gone. However, the views were worth it, even though there was later trauma on the open terraces as Lincoln contrived to lose 2-1 to Macclesfield in the last 10 minutes of the game! Are we disheartened?...... Answers on a postcard...
